Occupying the South-West corner of Gloucestershire, the Forest of Dean is one of largest surviving
tracts of ancient woodland in the British Isles and was designated a Royal Forest as far back as
Anglo-saxon times. The area offers wonderful driving routes ideal for an outing in one of our classic
cars, offering breathtaking views over an unspoilt natural environment as the road wends its way over
the hilly terrain. It is easy to see how this magical place could inspire works from Lord of the Rings
to Harry Potter.
At the far side of the forest we arrive at the River Wye, recently voted Britain’s favourite river,
forming part of the western boundary of Gloucestershire and indeed part of the border between England
and Wales. In this lower section of river, the Wye Valley is known for its stunning scenery, meandering
along steep-sided valleys punctuated with limestone outcrops and is a designated Area of Outstanding
Natural Beauty.
The road takes you along the serene valley, past the remote beauty of the 12th century Tintern Abbey
to the town of Chepstow with its magnificent 11th century Norman castle perched high upon a cliff above
the River Wye. The castle, thought to be the oldest surviving stone fortification in Britain, has a
fascinating history stretching from medieval times through to the end of the 17th century. With its
extensive ramparts and spectacular setting, Chepstow Castle should not be missed.
To complete your day of classic motoring follow the Roman Road through the picturesque towns and
villages along the banks of the River Severn back to Gloucester.
